Crossplay with a catch: Astroneer, Valheim and Palworld need a server

Not every “crossplay” label means you can simply invite a friend on another console. In a few survival and co-op games, cross-platform play only works when you play on a dedicated server. We now flag these games with a “Needs a server” badge and a step-by-step box on each game page.

Astroneer

Per the developer’s announcement, crossplay between PC and Xbox runs through dedicated servers; sessions hosted from inside the game stay on one platform. Community guides report that Xbox players need an official server provider and that Nintendo Switch is left out. We label these details as community-reported.

Valheim

Hosting guides say a Valheim server must be started with the crossplay option turned on, after which friends on PC, Xbox and PlayStation join with a code or address.

Palworld

Palworld crossplay runs on dedicated servers too: one person sets up a server and everyone joins it whatever their platform.

What to do

  • Rent or run a dedicated server for your group.
  • Check the game page for the exact steps and the sources we used.
  • Browse all of them on our special-setup list.
